WW2 Evacuees – Devon at War

Why were children evacuated to North Devon? What was their life like?

After a short introduction to the war, students will explore first hand accounts of evacuees in North Devon. Through object activities and active learning the students will experience an evacuee’s journey from packing a suitcase, preparing for air raids and calculating wartime rations.

This workshop lasts approximately 1.5 Hours. £35 per workshop (up to 30 children).

The workshop takes place in our learning room. Groups are then free for a teacher/leader led exploration of the museum.

Toys from the Past

In this popular workshop students discover how toys have changed throughout history. Using original and replica toys students will use play and collaborative learning to understand and identify different materials and changes in technology. Inspired by these objects students will create a Victorian peg doll or thaumatrope to take home.

This workshop lasts approximately 1 Hour. £30 per workshop (up to 30 children)

The workshop takes place in our learning room. Groups are then free for a teacher/leader led exploration of the museum.

What is History?

Studying original collections students will use primary source documents and objects to understand how artifacts help us understand and record history. Using collaborative learning students will then explore the museum looking for a key artifact connected to their story and theme.

Movers and Shakers: Significant local individuals from the past

This engaging workshop will use collaborate learning to study inspiring people from North Devon’s past. Utilising research and museum objects the students will discuss achievements, character and how people can shape society to understand how a person is deemed historically important.

This workshop lasts approximately 1 Hour. £30 per workshop (up to 30 children)

The workshop takes place in our learning room. Groups are then free for a teacher/leader led exploration of the museum.

Walking History: Barnstaple Heritage Trail

In this walking workshop students will follow the historical boundary of Barnstaple town discovering important buildings, amazing people and interesting facts. Using active learning students will record their favourite stories to create their own heritage trail on return to school.

This workshop lasts approximately 1.5 Hours. £40 per workshop (up to 30 children)

The workshop takes place in and around Barnstaple centre. Groups are then free for a teacher/leader led exploration of the museum.

Portraits in Art

What can a portrait tell us? Studying the portraits of lords, poets and artists in the collection students will explore how art reflects society, records the past and tells a story. Inspired by original paintings students will produce their own portraits developing their creative skills and understanding how art can shape history.
